It is named dermatitis because it involves inflammation of the skin, and seborrhoeic because it affects areas rich in sebaceous glands. It is more common in individuals with neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease. Psoriasis (of the scalp, face or chest): this may look similar to or may overlap with SD. It is associated with proliferation of various species of the skin commensal Malassezia in its yeast form. Oil from the scalp causes the skin cells to clump together and appear as white flakes. Dandruff can be caused by a number of things, including dry skin; sensitivity to hair products; and skin conditions such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, or eczema. A number of disorders are similar to seborrheic dermatitis (Table 1). Skin biopsies may effectively distinguish seborrheic dermatitis from similar disorders. Occasionally babies also develop this skin disease in the diaper area. Seborrheic dermatitis, often referred to as dandruff, is a common problem for many women with brown skin. These include eczema, the fungal infection, tinea versicolor and the subacute cutaneous form of lupus. Topical oil-based products designed to oil-the-scalp may initially mask symptoms of dryness and flaking but eventually lead to worsening of other symptoms such as itching and inflammation.
