Lasers and Emerging Light Technology in the Treatment of Psoriasis

Lasers and Emerging Light Technology in the Treatment of Psoriasis 1

The xenon chloride (XeCl) laser emits a 308 nm monochromatic beam of light. The 308 nm excimer laser can be used to treat plaque psoriasis,4 vitiligo4,5 and early-stage mycosis fungoides.6 Moreover, excimer laser has been reported to be more effective than conventional NB-UVB therapy in treating psoriasis. Although the current mainstay of treatment for AD involves topical therapies for mild cases and systemic agents or conventional UVB phototherapy for moderate-to-severe patients, the 308-nm excimer laser is emerging as a possible new treatment. This article will discuss some emerging and developing resurfacing therapies and treatments that are present today and soon to be available. Treatment of skin disorders using laser technologies dates back to the early 1960s, and quickly became a popular method for improving facial wrinkles, scars, skin growths, and blemishes. Further investigations have explored AFL-drug combinations such as topical methotrexate for psoriasis,24 delivery of therapeutic antibodies for local immunosuppression,25 enhancement of timolol permeation for infantile hemangioma treatment,26 and facilitating the penetration of nanoparticles or liposomes in pharmaceutical delivery systems. The article focuses on the use of lasers and emerging light technology in the treatment of psoriasis.

Nail disease is common in patients with psoriasis and is associated with a 2New and emerging research has led to cutting-edge therapies not previously available to our patients. At the Stanford Psoriasis Clinic, we use the most advanced technologies to treat even the most difficult cases of psoriasis, including injection and infusion therapies. Also called light therapy, phototherapy exposes the skin to lasers, LED, fluorescent lamps, and ultraviolet or infrared radiation to treat diseases. Low level laser (light) therapy (LLLT), phototherapy or photobiomodulation, refers to the use of light for altering biological activity of certain target(s) of interest. Some commonly used modalities include topical ointments containing vitamin A derivatives such as retinoic acid, dermabrasion, chemical peels, and ablative laser resurfacing technologies – most commonly utilizing carbon dioxide (CO2) or erbium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) lasers, or, some combined form of therapy (Airan and Hruza, 2005; Branham and Thomas, 1996; Paasch and Haedersdal, 2011). Psoriasis is a chronic and recurrent inflammatory skin condition that affects about 1 to 3 of the population (Gelfand et al., 2005; Stern et al., 2004). Management of keloids and hypertrophic scars: current and emerging options. Laser based techniques and solutions have found large applications in the emerging field of biomedical technology. Some of the common applications are lisled below.

However, the comparative effectiveness of topical and laser treatment of psoriasis is unknown because these treatments have not been directly compared in a prospective clinical study. Ros et al (1996) used the flash-lamp-pumped PDL, which selectively damages dermal vessels, to treat psoriatic plaques and evaluated the role of the vasculature in the therapeutic response. Nail disease is common in patients with psoriasis and is associated with a 3Dr. Lee’s favorite emerging technologies for facial rejuvenation? It was later discovered that what dentists were doing to treat the inside of the mouth had a skin tightening effect on the outer face. Today, the combination intraoral and outer laser procedure for skin rejuvenation is called Fotona 4D, using the SP Dynamis Pro, according to Dr. Ultraviolet phototherapy has been a recognized treatment for a number of skin conditions for decades, psoriasis, eczema, and pityriasis rosea among them. Neonatal jaundice has long been treated using artificial blue light. The home device light technology market is viewed as an important emerging market. Inc. (NASDAQ: PHMD), leaders in medical laser treatments for psoriasis and other skin diseases and marketers of skincare products to dermatologists. Technology for VUV instrumentation was largely driven by solar astronomy for many decades. Exposure to UVA light while the skin is hyper-photosensitive by taking psoralens is an effective treatment for psoriasis. Light-based technologies have, over the years, become commonplace in medical and aesthetic clinics as the treatment of choice for a range of problems, from hyperpigmentation and fine lines to acne scarring and skin cancer. Some of the most established modalities are lasers, light-emitting diode (LED) therapy, intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT), which are discussed in turn herein. LED is indicated for a range of problems, she says, including acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, pigmentation and ageing skin, as well as to promote healing after radiofrequency treatment, laser treatment, peels and surgery. In another sense, we are seeing the gradual evolution of light-based and other forms of technology that show increasing utility in a variety of procedures. Ahead, I will examine some of the latest trends in the laser- and device-based realm of treatment. One very interesting trend that’s started over the last year or two is what appears to be an emerging treatment algorithm for rejuvenation of the face that involves treatment with a device in addition to treatment with botulinum toxins and fillers.
