Importantly, 70-80 of patients with psoriatic arthritis have nail psoriasis. Photochemotherapy, however, appears to be successful in the treatment of psoriasis arising in the nail bed like onycholysis, salmon patches, and subungual but causes little improvement in the nail matrix symptom, that is, pitting (4). 1979;38:2268. Successful treatment of psoriasis of the nails. Nail psoriasis can be treated effectively using topical treatments, intralesional treatments, and systemic treatments, but an optimal effect may take up to 1 year. The assumption that topical corticosteroids in nail psoriasis are particularly effective in ameliorating nail matrix signs of this disease has resulted in several studies in which topical steroids were combined with treatments that are presumed to be more effective in nail bed signs of nail psoriasis. Abstract: Psoriasis of fingernails and toenails presents a challenge that has not been met by the available therapeutic modalities. Three cases of treatment with x-ray therapy of varying intensities are presented herein. Treatment of nail psoriasis includes different types of medications, from topical therapy to systemic therapy, according to the severity and extension of the disease. Topical therapy is effective in nail bed psoriasis for the remedial action on onycholysis and subungual hyperkeratosis. Finnerty EF. Successful treatment of psoriasis of the nails. Cutis. 1979;23:4344. The clinical evidence for nail psoriasis treatments is sparse, and properly conducted randomised controlled trials are historically rare.
